Politicians and political candidates get grilled for every faux pas they make in life. The American media calls attention to personal misgivings like affairs, shady career moves, and questionable life choices like drinking and driving. The GOP presidential race this year has been full of allegations regarding fraud, infidelity, racism, and shady backdoor dealings. The Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC ran an hour long special about Mitt Romney mistreating the family dog back in the 1980s. A montage of photos of his dog Seamus ran across the screen while Ms. Maddow tried to convince viewers it was relative to the presidential election. However politicians today are blessed that they did not have to worry about social media management and personal online marketing when they were young. Now every candidate needs a social media agency.
In ten or twenty years when today’s twenty-something year old people run for political office it will be interesting to see how the media and the American electorate react to the crazy photographs and videos that will surface. Almost everyone I know has at least one profile on Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. Photos and videos are tagged after the weekend debauchery and are immortalized on the internet forever. Once something is uploaded on the world wide web it is there forever. You can remove Facebook tags and delete Tweets but somewhere out there that picture of you doing body shots on the bar at your twenty-first birthday still exists.
Many people do not care that there are photos of them drinking, smoking, and worse, on their Facebook or MySpace page. But for those of us who do care about social media management and untag pictures like that, there is not much else we can do. The friend who uploaded the incriminating photo will always have it whether you untag it or not. Pictures are immortalized online all day everyday. Politicians today have an easy time with social media management and personal online marketing because most of them did not create a social media profile until they were already in office or running for office. All the photos of them partaking in adolescent and young adult debauchery are tucked away under someone’s bed or buried under decades of garbage. From time to time an incriminating photo from a politician’s past will surface and scandal will ensue. But this is nothing compared to what it will be like when my generation gets into the political arena.
Facebook immortalizes scandal on the internet for everyone to witness. But Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other social media websites are a cornerstone of our society. Facebook has become an institution that is not going to go away. Although these websites often embarrass us and depict us in regrettable situations, we have no intentions to delete our profiles and disconnect from social media. So when people run for political office in twenty years will we scrutinize their past as intensely as we do to politicians today?
I believe the answer is no, we will not. The collective social media experience that we share will stay with us as the years go by. When people from my generation run for office I think the American electorate will be more understanding of the fact that all of us at some point were embarrassed on Facebook. The news will have different notions regarding what is scandalous. Hopefully in twenty years we are more concerned with a candidate’s abilities than with the potentially obscene or incriminating Facebook photos taken two decades prior.

Recently Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta launched a new ad campaign that may have some cause for online reputation management on their part. The ad campaign known as “Strong4Life” based on a strong, no-nonsense approach at attacking childhood obesity. There are many people that think this approach may be too harsh, while there are some who think it is just what these children and their parents need. There are lots of opinions about these ads, while several of them seem to be on the negative side.
Children’s Healthcare may have to do some serious PR work in the area of reputation management both on and off the internet, but most of their negative feedback seems to be coming from the “Strong4Life” Facebook and Twitter pages. While they do have positive feedback on their pages, the focus seems to be on the feedback of the individuals claiming that the ads are severely negative.
Some of the detractors claim the ads do not allow for the other aspects of obesity. They claim that it is “too hurtful” to the individuals that the ads are aimed at. Several also feel it is the wrong way of approaching the problem of childhood obesity. Some individuals view the ads as attacks at the children and parents.
While some of these ads may be seen as, and may in fact be, too harsh, sometimes tough, straight talking is required in order for things to be accomplished. Some of the proponents of the ads claim that we need to stop hiding behind political correctness in this country in order to get things accomplished.
Sometimes a softer tactic is more appropriate, in which you get the target to ask questions of themselves and realize the change that is needed on their own. Instead of telling them what to do and being too frank, which may leave them to just focus on the severity of the words and not the underlying message, a softer approach could work better. It seems to be a delicate balance of what people deem political correctness and others deem correctness. When I was young beads and bead bracelets were toys for kids. I recall my young friends and cousins playing with beads and making bead bracelets at birthday parties and at school. Personally I was never into beads and bead bracelets. As I grew up beads and bead bracelets became less and less prevalent. They disappeared from my life for a while but emerged surprisingly not too long ago.
I started listening to new music and hanging out with a unique crowd in college. I became an avid fan of electronic, glitch, and trip-hop music. My cohorts introduced me to the rave scene and to a phenomena called “rave kandy.” Kandy is bead bracelets connected with crazy colored and glow-in-the-dark beads. Everyone at the raves and shows I went to was wearing these bead bracelets. I was in disbelief when I learned that most ravers made their bead bracelets themselves. Beads and bead bracelets are a mainstay of the rave world.
A few hours before a rave my friends would bust out huge bowls of neon beads and string. They would each come up with a rave persona for the night and design their bead bracelet or “rave kandy” accordingly. These beads were not the same beads I knew as a child. These rave beads were a multiplicity of sizes, wild colors, and they glowed in the dark. I think the number one reason I got excited about these bead bracelets was because they glow in the dark. Lights are fundamental to a rave so it is no wonder that glow-in-the-dark beads and bead bracelets would be popular among ravers.
Sometimes the term “rave kandy” can be deceiving. A friend of mine used to keep a bowl of beads out on his kitchen table the way some people leave books out on a coffee table. I brought an acquaintance with me to say hello to this friend and when she heard “bowl of rave kandy” she attempted to eat the beads. She was not the sharpest girl I have ever met but I cannot blame her entirely because the beads did resemble real candy. Be sure next time you are at a rave not to eat the “kandy.”
The beads and bead bracelets that ravers use to create “rave kandy” can be fun for kids as well. I brought my young cousins glow-in-the-dark beads and made neon bead bracelets with them. They were more crazy about these beads than any of my friends were excited over regular beads when we were kids. I never expected that beads and bead bracelets would come back into my life in college. Even more surprising was that bead bracelets were more awesome when I was a college student than when I was a child.
